pick a number. add 5 to the number. next, multiply by 4. subtract 12. divide by 4. please explain this equation to me.

This is not an equation, it's an expression.

The value of the expression is you first number added by 2. If you subtract 20 rather than 12, the value becomes your first number (x).

((x+5)*4-20)/4 => (4x+20-20)/4 => 4x/4 => x

This is an old game to fool people....
