Would the substitution property be required in proving the elimination method for systems of linear equations?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

No, the substitution property would not always be required in proving the elimination method.

They are simply two different methods of solving systems of linear equations but sometimes it is easier to solve the system when combining the two methods.

Read more about elimination and substitution method here.

I hope this helped you :)

I understand the substitution property is not required in the steps of elimination. I am trying to find out if there are any implicit assumptions lurking behind the steps or setup of the elimination method.

When we set up systems of equations as:
4x + 5y +8z = 2

5x + 4y +9z = 6

are we not implicitly setting the y's equal to each other? Are problems that label equations as y=x^2 and then y=x+4 on the same graph being a little sloppy? It seems like maybe we are not using distinct notation precisely so that an explicit step of setting the y's equal to each other is unnecessary.

Wow!!!!!For everyone is so think. It seems that my worry is really superfluous. I will continue to move in the direction of the effort, thank you, and I think that this thread is very good!!!!!
