Is the P E M/D A/S convention necessary to be compatible with exponent notation?
If we write: 2^3 + 7 then wouldn't it be impossible to reverse the priority of exponents and addition if we use our current notation for exponents?

Hi!

Just to explain to others what PEMDAS is: it is correct order of operations, and it stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction".

One could read more about it here.

Now to your question - unfortunately I think that for some it is possible to operate in a non correct order, hence the PEMDAS is still important to follow when we work with exponents.
