A wealthy Arab had three sons. On his death he left 17 beautiful horses to the 3 sons stating in his will that half the number of horses should go to the eldest, one third to the second and one ninth to the youngest son. If this were not a real life problem the answer would be 8.5, 5.666667 and 1.888889 which after adding would give you back approx. 16 which of course even mathematically not a convincing answer. So what according to you shld b done so that we can get a satisfactory result??

as it's a life like problem..
1/2 of 17 is 8.5
but a horse can't b made half.. so approx, take it as 9
similarly for 1/3 n 1/9 of 17, take appx n u r left wid 6 n 2 to each person
n d total sum of horses iz giving 17..
n wats more?? :O any other answer?? glad to know dat.!

well m not saying tht the answer is wrong...m jst saying tht the logic is worng...there is a trick to solve such kind of problems which mathematically do not give the results tht v xpect in a real life scenario...

just add 1 in 17 i.e 17+1= 18 then 1/2 of 18 is = 9
1/6 of 18 is = 6 nd 1/2 of 18 = 9

well the logic is correct but i shld say tht 1/6 of 18 is 3 and not 6 and the last number wld b 1/9 of 18 which is equal to 2 so the answer of madhuri was right while the logic of abv person is correct.. :)
